Newton Takes National Dog Show!

Turkey may have been the main course on Thanksgiving, but the National Dog Show in Philadelphia was the day’s main event! Since NBC started airing the contest back in 2002, the National Dog Show has become a Turkey-Day tradition with over 20 million viewers!

This year’s contest didn’t disappoint with the “Best in Show” title going to a 3-year-old Brussels Griffon terrier. Known on the contest circuit as GCH Somerset Wynzall Hashtag, this Griffon also goes by the name Newton. The little Griffon won the Toy Group category at the dog show and then competed with six other pooches for top dog including a Portuguese water dog,  French bulldog and an Old English sheepdog (one of our picks for great cold-weather dogs!).

Brussels Griffons are very popular dogs due to their alert, playful, fun-loving nature. They’re also well-known for their funny facial expressions and for being excellent companion dogs that can enjoy apartment living. They can range from 7 lbs to 12lbs on the average with some growing slightly larger, and come in a variety of colors such as red, beige, black and tan. A Brussels Griffon’s wiry coat also sheds less than other dogs making them preferable companions for people with allergies.

In Newton’s short career as a show dog, he’s already taken over 20 “Best in Show” awards from other contests. Many people compare Newton’s warm-hearted looks to the Star Wars character, Chewbacca. Do you see a resemblance?

Judging by the Griffon’s number of wins, we’d say the Force is definitely strong with this one!
